Opal & Tourmaline
● What makes opals so unique is this crazy effect called “play-of-colour,” where the stone flashes different colours. Like blues, reds, greens, etc. Depending on how light hits the stone. That colorful shimmer comes from how the stone is structured on a microscopic level. It is basically made up of tiny silica spheres that are packed together in just the right way to bend and scatter light.
● One of the most surprising facts about opals is that they can contain a significant amount of water. This water is not liquid in the traditional sense but is molecularly bound within the silica structure.
● One of the coolest things about Tourmaline is that it comes pretty much in every colour you can think of. It is also known as the “rainbow gemstone” for that reason. Sometimes one single crystal will show mulitple colours at once. There’s even a kind of tourmaline called “watermelon tourmaline” that’s pink in the middle and green around the edges, giving it a look of a sliced watermelon.
