Emerald, Chrysoprase & Onyx
● Although Emerald and Chrysoprase can look very similar, their colour comes from completely different trace elements. Emerald’s deep green is caused by chromium or vanadium, while chrysoprase gets its brighter, apple-green tone from nickel.
● Emerald almost always contains natural inclusions (tiny internal features), often described as a “garden” effect. Unlike most gemstones where clarity is key, these inclusions are normal and actually help confirm the stone is natural.
● Onyx forms in natural layers, meaning it can show distinct bands of black and white. The solid black version commonly seen in jewellery is often cut or treated to highlight a uniform appearance.
