Diamond, Sapphire & Quartz
● Diamonds are created about 150–200 km below the Earth’s surface under extreme heat and pressure, and can take over 1 billion years to form. Diamonds rank 10 on the Mohs scale, making them the hardest naturally occurring material on Earth. That’s why they’re used in cutting tools as well as jewelry.
● Sapphires rank 9 on the Mohs scale, making them one of the hardest gemstones—second only to diamonds. Both sapphires and rubies come from corundum. The only difference is color—red corundum is called ruby, everything else is sapphire.
● Quartz crystals vibrate at a precise frequency, which is why they’re used in quartz watches for accurate timekeeping. Quartz has a high melting point of around 1,650°C. It doesn’t easily deform under heat compared to many minerals.
